Conversational AI

In short

Conversational AI is the family of technologies that lets computers hold natural conversations with people, by text or by voice. Chatbots, voice agents and virtual assistants are all forms of it.

It combines several pieces: language understanding to work out what someone means, a way to decide the next step (look something up, ask a question, take an action) and language generation to reply. Voice versions add speech recognition and speech synthesis.

For a business, the practical value is handling routine conversations at any hour, such as answering questions, booking appointments, qualifying leads and updating records, while sensitive or complex conversations go to people.

The term is broad. When you evaluate a product, look at what it can actually do inside your systems, not only how fluent it sounds.

A worked example

An accounting firm's website chat answers "what do you charge for a tax return?", then asks two questions to recommend the right package, then books a call — all in one conversation, at 9 PM. That is conversational AI doing three jobs at once: understanding the question, deciding what to ask next and taking an action in the calendar.

When it is worth it, and when it isn't

Worth it: your customers ask questions in many different ways and you want them answered properly, not matched to keywords. Not needed: if every request is a simple choice that a short form or a single button handles well.

Common questions

Is conversational AI the same as a chatbot?

A chatbot is one application of it. Conversational AI also covers voice agents and assistants that talk by phone.

Does it understand other languages?

Modern systems handle many languages and can often reply in whichever language the customer writes or speaks in.

What makes one product better than another?

Less how fluent it sounds, more what it is connected to: your information, your calendar, your CRM, and a clean handover to a person.
